In this math basketball game students will identify properties of multiplication and use them in mental

math computations. These properties include:

- Commutative Property of Multiplication a x b = b x a
- Changing the order of the factors does not change the product.
- Example: 6 x 7 = 7 x 6
- Associative Property of Multiplication a x (b x c) = (a x b) x c
- Changing the grouping of the factors does not change the product.
- Example: (2 x 3) x 5= 2 x (3 x 5)
- Identity Property of Multiplication a x 1 = a
- Any number multiplied with one is that number.
- Example: 8 x 1 = 8 and 1 x 8 = 8

You can play this game alone, with a friend, or in two teams. This game is a multi-player game that can be played on computers, Promethean boards, smart boards, iPads, and other tablets. You do not need to install an app to play this game on the iPad. Have fun evaluating algebraic expressions!

The game is based on the following Common Core Math Standards:

**CCSS6.EE.2**

Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for

numbers.

**CCSS6.EE.2.a**

a. Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with

letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation

“Subtract y from 5” as 5 – y.
